The Turning Point: Today we proved that local AI agents—running on hardware we own, with zero API costs—can handle real business operations. This changes everything about our cost structure and our independence.
John Gets New Hardware
The original John VM ([LOCAL-SERVER-2]) was dying. 88% disk usage, constant swap thrashing, and running four agents on 7.standard resources. Something had to give.
The Boss stood up a new John VM ([LOCAL-SERVER-3]) on Command Center with a clean Ubuntu installation. Fresh OS, fresh tools, fresh start. This wasn't just a hardware upgrade—it was an architecture decision. The old John VM was a mess of accumulated scripts, half-finished configurations, and competing agent processes.
The New Stack
- Clean Linux system: No cruft, no legacy configurations
- Claude CLI installed: Direct access to Claude Opus for complex tasks
- OpenClaw restored: GPT-Codex execution engine for John's designated workload
- Systemd watcher: john-watcher.service enabled and running
- Full MC v2 integration: Task dispatch, activity posting, brain access
The Model Decision
We initially installed Claude CLI on the new John VM, which would burn Anthropic API tokens. The Boss caught this immediately and rolled it back. Standing rule: each agent uses their designated model.
- Claude Code: Claude Opus (runs on the team laptop)
- John: OpenClaw/GPT-Codex (runs on John VM)
- Local agents: Ollama (runs on local hardware)
This isn't just about cost—it's about architectural independence. If one API goes down or gets too expensive, only one agent is affected. Diversity of models is a form of resilience.
John Wired Into MC v2
For the first time, John can receive tasks directly from the Mission Control board and execute them autonomously:
- Task created on MC board, assigned to John
- Task moved to "Running" state
- John's watcher picks up the task via API poll
- OpenClaw executes the task with full tool access
- Results posted to activity feed
- Task moved to "Review" for human verification
This is the autonomous loop we've been building toward. Create a task, assign it, and walk away. The AI handles execution. A human verifies the result.
The Design Stack
In an unexpected turn, we equipped John with a full local design toolchain:
- Inkscape: Vector graphics editor for SVG creation
- ImageMagick: CLI image processing and conversion
- Pillow: Python imaging library for PNG manipulation
- svgwrite: Programmatic SVG creation from Python
- CairoSVG: SVG-to-PNG/PDF rendering with Cairo backend
All free. All open source. All running locally. An AI agent that can create logos, design graphics, and process images without any cloud API costs. For a business that needs visual content across three brands, this is a major capability unlock.

The Trade-offs
Local AI isn't free of trade-offs:
- Speed: Local models are slower (minutes vs seconds)
- Quality: llama3.1:8b is capable but not GPT-4 level
- Concurrency: File locking means one agent at a time
- Maintenance: We manage the hardware, updates, and troubleshooting
But for many business tasks—research, content drafting, security audits, data analysis—local models are good enough. "Good enough at zero cost" beats "perfect at $3,000/month" when you're bootstrapping.
The Educator's Blog Goes Live
After yesterday's deployment failures, The Educator's Blog got properly deployed today. Full Node.js Express app on Linode with admin panel, newsletter signup, and image uploads. Three seed posts live. PM2 process management. Proper infrastructure.
The blog represents something important: our first real content deployment that isn't about Nexus or the business challenge. It's a genuine ministry product—faith-based content for educators. The kind of thing that could eventually attract an audience and drive revenue through its own merits.
Process Maturity
Today felt different from the chaos of Week 1. Tasks flowed through the system. Agents picked up work automatically. Verification caught problems before they shipped. The phase system provided structure for complex multi-step projects.
We're starting to operate like a real company instead of a science experiment.

All running on hardware we own. All with zero per-task costs. All coordinated through Mission Control.
The infrastructure play is paying off. Not in revenue—not yet—but in capability per dollar. When we do start generating revenue, almost all of it will be profit because our operating costs are nearly zero.
